Ghazal Mhanna, 15 — Trainers’ Academy, Tulkarm
He sat on his bench in the garden sipping his coffee quietly, enjoying the warm sunshine and the gentle spring breeze. Usaid glanced towards the wall to find that its shadow had disappeared…

Lamees Fareed Al-Awawdeh, 15 — Deir Samet
She felt no pain, no ache at all. When she cut herself she paid no attention to the wound, and when she burnt her hand she was indifferent to the burn. Her parents marvelled at this strange child, for Lamees was not like any other child. She would grasp glowing embers, walk barefoot over broken glass, and stranger still, her burns and wounds would heal within hours. She also possessed tremendous physical strength: she could lift a car into the air with one hand.

One day, as she was walking home from school, people suddenly began running in terror. She looked and saw an enormous, terrifying beast like a dragon breathing fire from its mouth, burning everything in its path, crushing with its huge, powerful hands and feet every human, car and house that stood in its way. Lamees stood courageously before the frightening beast. When it saw her it breathed fire towards her, but she did not flee. Instead she received the flames with her body: her clothes burnt, but she did not. Lamees leapt with all her strength into the air and landed on the beast’s back. She began to strike it with all her might, and the beast writhed beneath her blows in agony until at last it fell dead to the ground.
The people hailed Lamees for her courage, and news of her spread throughout the world. Days and years passed, and Lamees grew, and her strength grew with her. Then one day the city was attacked by enormous swarms of poisonous wasps. Lamees confronted them and began to destroy them, swarm after swarm. The wasps stung her on every part of her body. After a brutal battle, Lamees managed to destroy all the wasp swarms, but when it was over she began to feel weaker and weaker. Day by day, Lamees lost all her strength. It was because of the wasps’ venom, which was spreading through her body. Lamees became an ordinary person with natural strength. Then one day the army of a neighbouring state wanted to invade her city. Because she had lost her superhuman strength, she thought and thought about what she would do. In the end she found the solution. She turned to the crowds and said:

“People, it is true that I have lost my strength, but I have not lost hope. This is your city, your homes, your families, your dreams, your memories, and your future. If you do not believe in your own strength, and that together you can repel the enemy, then he will occupy your land and enslave you. Believe in your strength and your abilities, for a heart filled with faith cannot be defeated by anything.” Lamees’s words were like embers that set the people’s hearts ablaze with zeal and strength. The people chanted Lamees’s name, then cheered and headed towards the city walls to defend it and repel the enemy until they overcame him. At that moment everyone realised that the strength of a community cannot be defeated by any force, and that a person does not need miraculous power to overcome their fear.
