He sat on his bench in the garden sipping his coffee quietly, enjoying the warm sunshine and the gentle spring breeze. Usaid glanced towards the wall to find that its shadow had disappeared…

A pale-faced, withered moon cast its feeble light over the houses and streets covered in rainwater. That night I walked through the alley and my shadow had a strange presence — my shadow stretched across the asphalt with a vividness that surpassed the substance of my own body.

The light and the rain and my reflection… and my shadow. I stopped to adjust my coat collar, but my shadow did not stop. Time froze in my veins as I watched my shadow move ahead of me and slip away with a terrifying calm, as if it had decided to separate from me… and from the lie of belonging to me.
I ran towards it, called out to it in a strangled voice, but it continued on with unwavering will, as though it possessed features I had lost long ago. I ran after it, ran and ran until it stopped at the dark corner of the street where blackness mingles with emptiness. It stopped, then turned towards me. Yes, I saw its features break free from everything to become an embodiment of all my hidden truths.

It whispered in a voice I knew well, a voice that was an echo of my own, but sharper and purer: “I’m tired of bowing down behind you, tired of walking with you, tired of being merely a reflection of footsteps that don’t know where they’re going.”
Terror crept into my heart and I felt a tremor course through my body, not from the evening cold but from the painful truth. Dozens of questions stole into my mind: How many times had I buried my desires to appear acceptable in the eyes of passers-by? How many times had I borrowed faces that didn’t resemble me to please the thronging hearts around me? And how many times had I not been myself in my struggle with nothing… and with something?

I stepped towards my shadow slowly, and in my eyes a bitter, painful confession: I’m tired of being the version everyone expects, while the version I want lives in you? A heavy silence fell in which the sound of the wind faded and the rain stopped. The shadow was no longer beneath my feet; instead I felt it steal inside me, seep into the pores of my body, inhabit the voids that hesitation had left in my soul.
Our footsteps united once more, but this time it was no longer the follower. We had become one body and one decision.
And since that evening I no longer look behind me to make sure my shadow is there… instead I look into the mirror of myself to confirm that I am still there, with all the darkness and light within me.
The End
