Ghazal Mhanna, 15 — Trainers’ Academy, Tulkarm
He sat on his bench in the garden sipping his coffee quietly, enjoying the warm sunshine and the gentle spring breeze. Usaid glanced towards the wall to find that its shadow had disappeared…

Mina Thair al-Sharawna, 15 — Deir Samet

That palace made Thair terribly curious. More than once he’d thought about going inside to explore it, but his father always warned him to stay away. The palace — which the villagers called the Palace of Darkness — was haunted by evil spirits, his father said. Anyone who went inside was touched by madness or struck by some terrible misfortune. But curiosity kept urging Thair to disobey his father and go to that palace right across from his house.
One day, while Thair was playing in his garden, he heard a faint voice coming from inside the castle. Thair froze in amazement and listened carefully… “Come… come,” the voice was saying. Before he knew it, his feet were leading him towards the castle. When he reached it, he stopped and gazed up at its towering dark walls and its huge door made of old, crumbling wood. He stepped forward hesitantly, and with a trembling hand he gripped the door handle and turned it. The door swung open at once. Thair hesitated. He wanted to turn back, but he gathered his courage, took a deep breath and went in. He’d only taken a few steps when the castle door slammed shut with such force that Thair felt his heart jump right out of his chest. He tried to open the door, but it was no use — from the inside, the door had no handle at all. Then he heard that same voice whisper

“Don’t waste your energy…”

Thair turned toward the voice and there stood a very old woman, bent and stooped with age, her eyes like two glowing embers staring at him without blinking once.
“Who are you?!”
I am the darkness of this palace.
- The darkness of this palace? What do you mean?!

I have lived in this palace since I was your age, Thair.
“When you were my age?! … But how do you know my name?!”
I’ve known you since you were born, and I’ve been waiting so eagerly for this day.
— “You’ve been waiting for this day? What do you mean?”
Yes, I want you to break the curse on this palace. You are the only one who can do it.

“How?”
- Say the words written on this message twice.
She handed him a folded yellow paper. He opened it and read the words aloud in a trembling voice.
“The light in my heart and the light of hearts lights the world and never goes out… The light in my heart and the light of hearts lights the world and never goes out…”

The moment Thair finished reading the words, a brilliant light filled the palace, bright as morning sunlight. Thair looked around and found that the palace had transformed into a place filled with the most magnificent colours, the most beautiful furniture, the most wonderful curtains, and the sweetest flowers. He turned towards the old woman and found she had disappeared. Thair went home and told his father what had happened to him in the Palace of Darkness. At first his father didn’t believe him, but when he went to the palace and found it completely changed, he was astounded and couldn’t believe his eyes.
All the villagers came to the palace. When they heard the story, one of them said, “It’s Mina, the little girl who vanished decades ago. That’s what my grandfather told me once. Some said she was killed, others that she was kidnapped, but there were those who said a curse had fallen on her — one that could only be lifted by a child with a heart full of truth, innocence, love and purity. It seems Thair was that child, and she’d been waiting for this day to be free of her curse.”

From that day on, the palace became a place where the villagers gathered in love, kindness and friendship. The Palace of Darkness became the Palace of Light. And many villagers told how they would sometimes see a little girl standing at the palace window, watching passers-by with happiness and peace.
