He sat on his bench in the garden sipping his coffee quietly, enjoying the warm sunshine and the gentle spring breeze. Usaid glanced towards the wall to find that its shadow had disappeared…

“I can return you to your normal size if you promise me you’ll change.” This is what Raed said to his friend Ahmed, a twelve-year-old boy whose body had shrunk to the size of a four-year-old.

What happened was that Ahmed was a mischievous, nasty boy who was used to bullying his friends, the people in his neighbourhood and his neighbours. The story began when Ahmed was on his way to school and met a street cleaner sweeping the road near his house. Ahmed looked at him with contempt and said, “Sweep properly, you bin man.” The street cleaner didn’t answer, but Ahmed’s height dropped by a few centimetres. Ahmed continued on his way until he met his neighbours’ son Tamer, who was in a wheelchair. He looked at him with disgust and said, “Good morning, you cripple.” At that moment Ahmed’s body shrank again and his height dropped by a few more centimetres.
Ahmed noticed that his clothes had become looser than they were. At first he paid no attention, but when he smashed a juice bottle on the pavement he shrank more and more until he became so short that everything around him looked huge, and the people around him looked like giants. Ahmed huddled beside one of the buildings and began to cry bitterly. While he was like this, his friend Raed appeared before him. “I can return you to your normal size if you promise me you’ll change.” Ahmed wiped away his tears with his shirt sleeves and said, “I promise, but how?” Raed said, “You have to put right all the mistakes you made today.” “All right, I promise I will.”

Ahmed retraced his steps towards home. When he reached the pavement where he’d smashed the bottle, he picked up the glass and threw it in the bin, and his height increased by a few centimetres. He felt happy and quickened his pace to catch up with his neighbours’ son, Tamer. He did catch him, just before he got on the bus. Ahmed went up to him and apologised, and felt his height increase by a few more centimetres. He felt even happier. After just a few steps he saw the street cleaner. He went up to him and apologised, and his height increased by a few more centimetres until he was back to his normal height.
Ahmed learnt a hard lesson from this incident, and promised himself he would never insult anyone again.
