Ghazal Mhanna, 15 — Trainers’ Academy, Tulkarm
He sat on his bench in the garden, quietly sipping his coffee. He drank from his cup, enjoying the warm sunshine and the gentle spring breeze. Usaid looked towards the wall and noticed something strange — the wall’s shadow had disappeared. He rubbed his eyes in surprise and looked at the trees. They had no shadows either. He thought it must be because he was tired and worn out from work.
He went back home, went into his room, turned on the light and looked around, but he could not find his shadow. He rushed to his wife, frightened, and said: “Muna, my shadow has disappeared.” His wife laughed at his words and said: “What are you saying? You seem exhausted from work, my husband.” “Perhaps,” he said to himself, and headed off to work.
He walked down the street, but found everyone confused, searching for their shadows. He took out his phone and opened a news site — it was broadcasting live from the city streets. The shadows had begun to disappear, then they started appearing again and jumping from person to person: a thief’s shadow taking the place of an honest man’s shadow, a killer’s shadow taking the place of an innocent man’s shadow, a woman’s shadow taking the place of a man’s shadow, a rude man’s shadow taking the place of a polite man’s shadow… until the shadows were all mixed up among the people, and no one felt like themselves any more, or that their actions were their own, because their shadow didn’t represent them.
The man went to the town square to search for his shadow. There he found his sister Ghazal crying as she watched her shadow doing bad things right before her eyes. He took her hand and tried to pull her home, but she pulled her hand away and said: “The shadow isn’t exposing us, brother. The shadow is the bad part inside us, the part we refuse to admit is there. Our shadows grew tired of the lying and pretending and gossip and hurting one another, so they broke away to breathe freedom and heal from their wounds.”
“You’re right,” said Usaid. “It’s time I confessed something to you. Years ago, our village suffered from thirst and drought. One day, as I was walking in the valley near the village, I found a spring of fresh water. But I didn’t tell anyone about it and kept it for myself. I placed a large stone over the spring so no one would find it. I was very selfish, and today my shadow is exposing me.”
Then the people began to confess their sins and mistakes, one after another. Usaid stood in the midst of the crowd and confessed the secret of the spring, telling them where it was. The shadows began returning to their owners, little by little, and people’s lives grew better and better. They became more honest and more helpful, and life grew more beautiful with cooperation and love.
